2011
BOTANICAL GARDENS
HIKE
2011 started
with a short hike from Eleanor
Brown House to the Botanical Gardens, via the
Monument. Best of all was the mini picnic we
enjoyed in the Botanical Gardens, after our
explorations.

HIKING CLUB TRIP
TO DIAS CROSS
On Sat 6th of February, 2010
the Hiking club did a day walk to Dias Cross.
We started our walk on a sunny Saturday morning from
the quiet seaside resort of Boknes. The walk
of around 3 km, along the pristine, golden beach to
the headland known as Dias Cross took us around an
hour.
We stopped for brunch at the
base of the headland and a few people already
started to explore the rock formations and paddle in
the sea. After a rest and food we walked up onto the
top of the headland to visit the site of the
original stone pillar and cross (Padrão de São
Gregorio) placed their by the Portuguese explorer
Bartholomew Dias in February 1488.
A wooden deck on top of the
headland gave us stunning views back towards Boknes,
onwards to Kenton and out to sea. Afterwards we
walked down onto the dune rock platforms on the far
side (Bushman’s river side) of the headland and
spent an hour or so relaxing, paddling, swimming,
body surfing and exploring.
We returned to Boknes along
the beach, salty, sandy, windblown and tired but
refreshed. On the return trip to Grahamstown
we made a brief stop at Stanley’s Restaurant to
admire the view and to allow those that wanted to
get a cool drink or a bowl of ice cream. All
in all a good day out!
