RAPEWISE TALK

Dr. Buswell speaking about a difficult

topic very close to his heart

On 10 February, VG hosted medical doctor and forensic psychologist, Dr. John Busswell.  In his thought-provoking talk on rape, he gave fantastic advice and opened the VG learners' eyes to what goes on outside of their safe environment.  Dr. Busswell has had many shocking experiences dealing with rape cases.  He spoke about many different dangers involving rape such as HIV, drugs and other serious issues.  His talk touched every single VG learner.  Amber Higgitt, a VG matric learner said, "It was amazing. I could have listened to him all day".  Some of the grade 8s were a little overwhelmed by some of the graphic detail, but everyone certainly got the message that underage sex is rape, and that there are very strong reasons for abstinence where choice is involved.

MXit MATHS

We have been invited to participate in a pilot programme where learners use MXit applications to access mathematics information, exercises and tests on their cell phones.  The project will be open to grade 10 learners.  VGHS was one of only six schools in the Eastern Cape who were invited to participate in this project.

The project has been set up with the co-operation of the South African government, Nokia, MXit and Pearson.  The mobile learning project aims to improve the mathematical skills of learners and encourage learners to take mathematics to Grade 12.  The service is free and can be used on mobile phones with colour screens and WAP applications.  Learners will only be able to “chat” to learners in their class and not to people outside the programme.  It is expected that in this way they will be able to talk about maths and help each other.

The developers of the programme will use the information gained in the pilot project to improve systems and open mobile learning to all grade 10 learners in the country, and eventually world wide. What an opportunity!
