SMARTIES
Every term
three VG runs a Smarties program, also known as WEP
(Wider Education Program). This program is designed
to teach the girls skills that they would have not
learnt during a normal school day and is supposed to
expand their horizons. This year's program included
activities such as gum boot dancing, touch rugby,
knitting and Pilates.

NATIONAL SCHOOLS'
FESTIVAL
From the 10th
to the 14th of July 10 VGHS matrics
participated in the Standard Bank National Schools’
Festival and were able to interact with learners
from schools all across South Africa. The highlights
of the festival were the keynote address by comedian
Siv Ngesi and a lecture by entrepreneur and actress
Nobulali Dangazele, who, among other things, taught
us that we should use our opportunities to learn and
use our knowledge to lead others. Like Nobulali
said: “Whatever you don’t know is in a book, and if
it isn’t then you have to write that book!”
The
workshops offered at the festival included acting,
dance and journalism. Most of these encouraged
out-of-the box thinking and physical activities. We
also got to experience the best of the National
Arts’ Festival by watching some of the shows that
had been performed during it and earmarked for the
Schools’ Festival. Waking up at half past six each
morning for the week was worth the inspiring
messages and skills that we gained throughout the
festival!

GRADE 12 TALK
by
Onyeka Osode
On 15
February the Grade 12 learners were honored by a
visit from Dr Mabizela, the Deputy Vice
Chancellor of Rhodes University. That the
inspiring message touched hearts was evident from
the endless queue of questions that flooded the
Doctor. This was an opportunity that was definitely
not to be missed.
His message
to us was aimed at equipping us to be successful
when we leave school, assisting us with guidelines
on how to go about tertiary education, bursaries, as
well as the university point system.
I am sure I
speak on behalf of everyone when I say we were
challenged and we shall excel in our upcoming exams
as we know the formula to success: determination,
discipline and hard work.

GIDEON
BIBLE SOCIETY
On 15
February Mr Ball and Mr Wells visited
our school on behalf of the Gideon Bible Society.
This society was founded in 1899, but has worked in
South Africa since 1950. Their objective is to
place New Testaments free of charge. Every year 1.7
billion New Testaments are distributed in South
Africa in 9 of our official languages.
At
VG 60 of our grade 8 learners indicated that they
wished to receive a New Testament.
