TERM 1 REPORT
by
Marné Mostert
This term
we welcomed Mrs Van der Waal as our coach and we
raised enough money for starting blocks with our
Swim-a-thon. We participated in the Inter-Districts
gala at Graeme College where our girls swam their
hearts out in a number of races. Aimee Ferreira
travelled to Port Elizabeth for the provincial
trials and came first in her heat in the freestyle.

MARNE TAKES PART IN
LONG DISTANCE SWIM
On the 21st of March Marné
Mostert, who recently made headlines because of her
marathon 18.5 km swim in the VG swimathon travelled
to Cape Town to participate in the Human Rights Day
Swim. She did this in order to qualify for the
Freedom Swim from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand on
the 7/8th of May later this year.

Marne
Mostert
Marné had to swim
2.5kms and regardless of when she finished had to
stay in the 12°C water for a total of 1hour and
20minutes. It was her first open-water swim she said
it was challenging but absolutely wonderful at the
same time. Having qualified for the big swim in May,
she will continue with strenuous training over the
next month.

2011 Swim-a-thon
Fifteen
girls took to the pool on Friday 11 February at
18:00 to test their endurance in swimming as many
laps as they were physically able. The format of
the swim involves the girls taking a 5 min snack
break every hour.
Marné
Mostert, our star
Swim-a-thoner” has doggedly outdone herself again by
setting herself the target of swimming 700 laps
(target in 2009 was 600, but swam 668), then decided
that 712 was a special number and proceeded to
achieved this in a time of 6hrs 35min. Her willpower
knows no bounds. Aimee Ferreira made a
valiant effort to improve on her 2009 performance by
swimming 450 laps (original target 200) by swimming
her 450 laps in a time of 4hrs 45min. A Saturday
commitment prevented her from continuing for as long
as Marné did as her personal mission to try
to out-swim her.
Tayla
Solomon and Natasha
Nel persevered and swam 350 laps at 3hrs 55min
and 3hrs and 27min respectively.
The
girls who decided that they still had
energy
available turned their original targets into round
figures, they are Monique Mclean (110
into 150) and Jessica Wentworth (150 into
200).
The girls who reached the target
they set themselves are Nicole Wilson, 110
laps, and Samantha Meaton, 100 laps.
Calf cramps
prevented Bronwyn Smith (150-80) and
Nicole Richards (500-172) from reaching their
targets.
Newcomers
to the pool – Deborah Mushwana (125 -130),
Zimkhita Sani (125 – 130), Alex Stevens (200
– 142), Micaela Goliath (100 – 74) and
Nicole Potgieter (50 -50) are to be commended
for the effort that they put into their swim.
Marné
has left her legacy as well as a steep goal for the
next girl who dares to take on the task.
